Each brain injury case is different and the precise course of treatment varies enormously from person to person. However, there are some constants that can improve the outcome for all brain injury patients. Having a positive attitude and getting needed support are critical for people seeking to recover after a brain injury.

A case in Rockford illustrates this beautifully. Michelle Morin, 28, was seriously injured in a crash caused by a drunk driver in the summer of 2010. She suffered a serious brain injury and was unable to walk, talk or even sit up after awaking from a coma that lasted 47 days.

She believes that part of her success is because she approached physical therapy like school. "It was like you just go through class and do whatever you're required to do," Morin said. "I was just hoping to get up and get home."

Her mother, who currently lives with her to help, also credits the friend who was with her at the time of the crash, her friend's husband, her physical therapist, and many other friends. Morin says, "Don't abandon your friends after an accident. Just be there for them."

Morin's physical therapist points to her attitude and the amount of support she receives from family and friends. An example is her attitude toward her wheelchair; Morin's goal is to return the wheelchair to the place where she bought it because she won't need it anymore.

Both civil and criminal charges are pending against the driver of the vehicle that crashed into the Jeep in which Morin and her friend were riding.
